Does Eminem Still Smoke Weed? 18 Years Sober, One Steak Pun and a 2 Chainz Studio Story
Eminem has been sober since April 20, 2008, and in April he marked 18 years with a sobriety coin. So why does a weed line on Cinderella Man keep fans asking? Here is the line, the receipts, and what 2 Chainz saw in the studio.

Short answer: no. Long answer: a Recovery era punchline, a sobriety date that lands on 4/20, and a studio where Eminem's own team would not let 2 Chainz light up.
Every few months the same question takes over Eminem fan pages: if Marshall has been clean since 2008, why is he rapping about weed on Cinderella Man, a song from the album literally called Recovery?
Here is everything on the record, with the receipts.
The receipt: 18 years, posted by Em himself
Eminem's sobriety date is April 20, 2008. Yes, 4/20, the most ironic date possible for a guy who used to rap about rolling joints. Every April he marks it publicly, and this April he posted his 18 year coin with a two character caption: the roman numeral and a medal.

He has been doing this for years. Back in 2020, at twelve years, he posted the coin to X with a nod to his own Recovery single:
The line everyone quotes
The weed reference lives in the second verse of Cinderella Man, in the middle of a run of food bars. His potato is baked. His filet is smoking weed. And the payoff: the stakes are high. Steaks, high.
That is the whole joke. Nothing in the verse says Marshall is smoking. A piece of meat is. It is the same move he has made a thousand times, where the double meaning is the point and the literal reading is the trap.

And the rest of the song points the opposite direction. It opens with Em saying he technically should not even be here, which he told Billboard in 2010 was about the stretch after Encore: losing Proof and spiraling on pills. Cinderella Man is a survivor's song, not a relapse confession.
What he was actually addicted to
Weed is not what nearly killed him. Pills were. Vicodin, Valium, Ambien and more, by the handful. He went to rehab for sleep medication in 2005 and it did not stick. In December 2007 he overdosed on methadone and, by his own account, was a couple of hours from dying. He got sober the following spring through a 12 step program and has stayed there.

That matters for the weed question. Twelve step programs generally ask members to stay off every mood altering substance, not only the one that nearly killed them. Em has never carved out weed as an exception, publicly or otherwise.
The 2 Chainz story
The best real world evidence did not come from Eminem at all. In May 2025, 2 Chainz told Shannon Sharpe on Club Shay Shay that when he worked with Eminem, he was not allowed to smoke in the studio. The kicker: it was not Em's rule.
2 Chainz: "When I did work with Eminem, I couldn't smoke in there. It was kinda funny. It was his people, not Eminem."
According to 2 Chainz, Em's team was so protective that they put speakers outside so he could hear the beat while he smoked on what he called a beautiful day in Malibu. When Em came out to talk, his people tried to stop him. Em's reaction, per 2 Chainz, was basically: relax, what do you think I'm about to do?
Read that again. The people closest to him guard his sobriety like a vault, and Em himself is so settled in it that a guy smoking ten feet away does not faze him. That is not what someone sneaking blunts looks like.
What about Relapse?
If you want the harder case, it is Relapse, not Recovery. That album was recorded mostly after his sobriety date, and Old Time's Sake has Em and Dr. Dre celebrating weed. But Relapse was a horror movie character album, accents and all, and Eminem has since written a lot of it off himself. Rapping a character in the first months of recovery is not the same as using.
The verdict
There is no interview, post or credible report of Eminem smoking weed since April 2008. There are eighteen years of coins, a team that bans weed from his studio sessions, and one very good steak pun.
Anyone telling you Cinderella Man proves he still smokes is reading a punchline as a confession.
